Why We Don't Whip Our Tallow: The Truth About Tallow Skincare + Other Things You Should Watch Out For

We believe our customers deserve to know the facts about tallow-based skincare. After extensive research and testing, we've chosen to keep our tallow balm unwhipped – here's why.

Get My Unwhipped Tallow Balm

1. You Get More Value With Unwhipped Tallow

When tallow is whipped, you're essentially paying premium prices for air. The whipping process introduces air that makes the product appear larger in the container, but you're getting significantly less actual product.

The actual weight of whipped products is often as low as 70% of what the container size suggests because most of it is air.

At Esoteric Made, we never whip our tallow. Our dense balm gives you maximum value – pure, nutrient-rich tallow with no fillers or air pockets. A little goes a remarkably long way.

2. Unwhipped Tallow Maintains Its Effectiveness Longer

Whipping doesn't just add air – it accelerates oxidation. When air is rapidly introduced into tallow through the whipping process, it begins breaking down the beneficial compounds immediately.

By whipping with a blender or mixer, companies are repeatedly smashing the chemical structure of the ingredients, which causes the product to degrade quickly. You can actually see this happening as the tallow changes from a light yellow colour to white during whipping.

Our unwhipped tallow balm preserves the integrity of the ingredients, ensuring you get the full skincare benefits with every application, from the first use to the last.

Whipped Tallow Isn't The Only Thing To Watch Our For.

The Colour Difference: Why Quality Matters

The colour of tallow-based skincare reveals a lot about its quality. High-quality tallow from 100% grass-fed and grass-finished animals has a naturally yellow hue. This yellow colour comes from elevated beta-carotene content found in animals that graze on fresh, green pastures.

If you see tallow skincare that's extremely white in appearance, it likely means one of three things:

  • The tallow has been over-processed or chemically deodorised
  • It's been whipped, which introduces air and lightens the colour
  • The source material may not be 100% grass-fed and grass-finished

At Esoteric Made, our tallow balm maintains its natural yellow tone—visible proof of its nutrient density and proper processing.

Suet Tallow vs. Non-Suet Tallow: Not All Tallow Is Equal

Many tallow skincare brands don't specify what type of tallow they use. This matters significantly for quality and effectiveness.

Suet tallow comes specifically from the fat surrounding the kidneys and loin of the animal. This fat is:

  • The most nutrient-dense part of the animal
  • Higher in fat-soluble vitamins (A, D, E, K)
  • Richer in beneficial fatty acids your skin needs
  • More stable and less prone to oxidation

Non-suet tallow is derived from random body fat from various parts of the animal. It typically has:

  • Lower nutrient content
  • Less consistent composition
  • Requires more processing to be usable in skincare
  • Is cheaper

At Esoteric Made, we exclusively use 100% grass-fed suet tallow—never random body fat—ensuring you get the highest quality, most beneficial form of tallow possible for your skin.

The Essential Oil Difference

Many tallow-based skincare products contain excessive amounts of essential oils—and for a specific reason. When companies use lower quality tallow, they often need to mask the unpleasant odour with high concentrations of essential oils.

This practice creates two significant problems:

  1. Skin irritation: High concentrations of essential oils can irritate sensitive skin, causing redness, burning, or allergic reactions—exactly what you're trying to avoid by choosing natural skincare.

  2. Photosensitivity: Something not too well known is many essential oils make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, potentially causing discoloration or burns when exposed to UV rays. During our rsearch of other tallow balms, there were a surprisingly large number of them that used essential oils with photo sensitivity.

At Esoteric Made, we use only a 0.5% essential oil dilution in our tallow balm—just enough to create a pleasant, subtle aroma without risking irritation. We can use such a minimal amount because our high-quality tallow naturally has minimal odour, eliminating the need to mask it with excessive fragrances. And we specifically use essential oil that doesn't have any photo sensitivity.

Quality You Can Trust

Our attention to ingredient quality sets our tallow balm apart:

  • 100% grassfed suet tallow from the nutrient-dense fat around the kidney, not random body parts
  • Cold-pressed olive oil from recently harvested batches, never heated during processing to preserve its nutritional value
  • Raw honey that's never heated above 35°C, preserving its beneficial enzymes and antioxidants, freshly sourced from local farms
  • Organic beeswax that's slowly filtered to remove all impurities
  • Only 0.5% essential oil dilution – just enough for a pleasant aroma without irritating skin

Properly made tallow balm should have a naturally yellow hue from the beta-carotene in grassfed tallow. If you see tallow skincare that's extremely white, it's likely been over-processed or whipped, diminishing its beneficial properties.

The Esoteric Made Difference

Our unwhipped Tallow & Honey Soothing Moisturiser Balm delivers exceptional results because we focus on quality, not shortcuts:

  • Rich and silky texture that absorbs quickly without a greasy residue
  • Helps heal and strengthen the skin barrier for lasting moisture
  • Dense formula with no air means each jar lasts longer
  • Non-comedogenic formula suitable for all skin types
  • Naturally yellow colour indicating high beta-carotene content
  • Made exclusively from suet tallow for maximum nutrient density

Don't be fooled by pretty, whipped textures that look good in the jar but deliver less value and effectiveness. The only superior benefit of whipped tallow balm is the creamy texture makes it slightly easier to apply. However, this is only the case in the very beginning, and then it inevitably hardens anyway (and quickly in the depths of winter). Also by then usually its already rancid.

By formulating in a highly specific way, here at Esoteric Made we maintain tallow’s unique saturated fatty acid profile in the process.
